| A security operations centre may be established by a regional, state or national government body to track security compliance by any number of ports, port facilities and/or vessel operators or may be located within a large port authority to track and coordinate port facility operators.
The major tasks of a maritime security operations centre are to;
- Maintain directories of security related personnel at all managed locations
- Be able to notify relevant security personnel at a location in the event of a security warning
- Be able to coordinate and record the responses of multiple, security related organizations
- Ensure that the employees of ports, port facilities and vessel owners possess required security certifications and training through appropriate endorsed training providers.

At a national level, the following tasks are also required;
- Accept, review and approve ship security plans
- Accept, review and approve port and port facility security plans
- Issue Ship Security Certificates and Port Compliance certificates
- Inspect and audit on a regular basis, the compliance with security plans by ports and vessels
